Why do people use a macbook on the stage?

I know I sound really ignorant, but I've been to a few live shows and almost every time I see a macbook on the stage, plugged into some audio equipment thing... What is it used for? and do only macbooks work for that sort of thing, or can a windows laptop be used as well?
