Why did Frodo go down?

How could Shelob's stinger take Frodo out when he was wearing his *mithril* vest the entire time? If a Cave Troll with a giant spear [Film 1 of LOTRs] couldn't penetrate it, how could a flimsy organic stinger get through his mithril armor?
